Wilo-Stratos GIGA – good things come in threes: powerful, controlled, compact

The GIGA from Wilo is proof that high efficiency pays off. Wilo-Stratos GIGA is the solution for optimising the cost of heating, cold water and cooling systems in industrial applications and in commercial buildings.

As the first high efficiency glanded pump, it operates reliably with the minimum of effort. Compared to conventional uncontrolled pumps, Wilo-Stratos GIGA saves up to 70% energy - per pump and year, this adds up to a saving of 8 tonnes of CO2  per pump, per year. This is possible because Wilo has designed every component, from the drive, through the electronics to the hydraulics, to operate at the highest level, while perfectly matching the components with each other.

Fast and controllable: the motor

In the High Efficiency Drive (HED), WILO has developed a pump drive with a motor efficiency that far exceeds IE4, the most stringent class defined today. The core of this achievement can be traced back to the choice of EC motor technology. Amongst other features, these motors have almost no rotor-related losses. This is combined with further loss reductions because Wilo has managed to make the product more compact. The HED for Wilo-Stratos GIGA can be as small as a third of the size of a conventional asynchronous motor with the same rated motor power. By reducing the motor size, it is possible to achieve higher speeds, without this having a negative impact on the components' service lives. As the size shrinks, so do the material resistances. One further, important benefit is that the working speed of EC motor technology can be adjusted precisely to hydraulic components – and this has been introduced to perfection in Wilo-Stratos GIGA.

Simple and precise: the electronics

Thanks to the tried-and-tested "red-button technology", Wilo-Stratos GIGA can be handled simply and conveniently with a single button control. Alternatively, the device can be controlled via infrared connection to an IR monitor, an IR USB adapter or a building management system. The control unit, with its illuminated display, saves all the relevant data for constant and variable differential pressure as well as the calibration of pressure in metres of water. It is no longer necessary to have an external device to display the parameters. All the electronics and the frequency converter were designed specifically for Wilo-Stratos GIGA. This is the reason for the low energy consumption by the electronics and the optimised control mechanisms. Wilo-Stratos GIGA has a control radius that is up to three times the size achieved by other controlled pumps, corresponding to a range of 1 to 51 metres of water. The pump's control mechanisms function very precisely as a result of the meticulous measurements and documentation that account for the quality of the software.

Small and versatile: the hydraulics

The hydraulics for Wilo-Stratos GIGA is designed to ensure the maximum possible efficiency in the system. Both the housing and the three-dimensional impellers are shaped very precisely into a geometric form that maximises flow and minimises impedance. Because of this, the Wilo-Stratos GIGA single-stage low-pressure centrifugal pump is clearly superior to traditional induction motor pumps. The powerful drive increases the rotational speed, which reduces the size and weight of the hydraulics.  The speed makes it possible to reduce the impeller diameter while keeping the hydraulic output at the level of much larger conventional pumps. This also made it possible to reduce the size of the entire pump housing. The pump's components are produced to weigh and measure less and simultaneously to be more precise. Overall, the pump weighs 55% less and is 39% smaller than pumps in the Wilo IL-E series, for example. This not only saves valuable resources, it also makes transport, handling and installation far easier. The system is designed for durability and versatility.  The impeller consists of 60% Ryton, a thermoplastic high-tech plastic, and 40% reinforced fibreglass with a stainless steel core. The material is corrosion resistant and works reliably with a variety of fluids in a temperature range of minus 20 to plus 140 degrees Celsius.

Efficiency pays off

All these benefits add up to unbeatable energy - and cost-efficiency.  Compared to the Wilo IL-E series, Wilo-Stratos GIGA uses about 31% less energy per year – and 70% less than comparable uncontrolled pumps. With 6,000 operating hours per year and an energy price of 0.22 EUR per kilowatt hour, the investment in GIGA begins to pay for itself after just one year.
