Johnston awarded ISO 14001 environmental accreditation
6 November 2008, News release from Johnston Sweepers Ltd
Johnston Sweepers has been awarded ISO 14001 accreditation, the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS) by the British Standards Institute.
The prestigious award comes after an in-depth assessment by BSI Inspectors in which they examined every aspect of Johnston's environmental policy and systems, before announcing that they would be recommending the award.
John Halley, who heads up Johnston's Customer Support Division, started the process earlier this year. "We wanted to go for the ISO14001 award because it puts the environmental consideration we invest in our design, purchasing and manufacturing on a formal footing, and officially recognises all the work we have already been doing in this area at Johnston."
He went on, "Having ISO14001 accreditation also backs up Johnston's increasing concern to conduct our business in a sustainable way. This on-going programme takes in all aspects of recycling and reduction of fuel usage, both in our manufacturing process and in the operation of our sweepers, and also considers the long-term recyclabilty of our products themselves".
ISO 14001 is the key international standard in the ISO 14000 series standards, and specifies a process for controlling and improving a company's environmental performance. Increasingly, it is becoming a factor in the tender process, reflecting mounting concern for sustainability in street cleansing and all aspects of municipal operations.
Commenting on the accreditation, Coen Van Rosmalen, Managing Director of Johnston Sweepers, said, "Having a responsible environmental policy has advantages in all aspects of our business. It creates a better working environment for our staff, ensures we have systems and equipment in place to deal with spills and accidents, and gives our customers confidence in Johnston's on-going commitment to the environment."
