Geotech Static Gas Analyser Reliability pays at Landfill Systems

When Ipswich-based biogas flare manufacturer, Landfill Systems needed a static gas analyser with telemetry for landfill gas power generation it found the Geotech AEMS system fitted the bill perfectly.

"It was easy for us to add on our plant information to the AEMS telemetry," said, Nick Palmer, director, Landfill Systems. That was a couple of years ago.

Since then Landfill Systems has supplied more Geotech static gas analyser to sites in the UK, including Northern Ireland with the latest on its way to a site in the heart of Wiltshire for one of the 'big five' landfill operators. For large sites Landfill Systems' flare equipment is part of the permanent installation. On smaller sites flares and gas analysers are skid-mounted and delivered complete.

Nick Palmer said, "The prime requirements for a fixed gas analysis system are reliability and acceptability to customers." He added that the Geotech name was widely know and well accepted by his clients who are equally confident with Geotech products, spares and service support. "That makes it an easy negotiation, especially with the new Geotech GA3000 which is ideally tailored to specific UK requirements and associated budgets."

Initially Landfill Systems fitted the Geotech Automated Extraction Monitoring System (AEMS). Now it specifies the recently introduced Geotech GA3000 static gas analyser designed for very easy user installation with 4-20mA outputs showing concentrations of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2) and, optionally, hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

According to Nick Palmer the main purpose for static gas analysers on landfill gas power generation projects is to provide information and protection to staff and systems. The permanent display of gas content shows operators what is going on and the Geotech analysers generate a 'methane concentration' signal which many gas engines require to operate and ramp the engine load up or down. Gas concentration signals of CO2, O2 and H2S and pre-defined settings protect the CHP/gas engines and may divert low-grade gas to flare.

This is equally true of Landfill Systems' flares on standby at anaerobic digester (AD) sites if gas cannot be used and needs to be flared when a CHP/gas engine is temporarily off line. "These systems must work 24/7 automatically and unattended so certainty about reliability is as essential for our customers as it is for Landfill Systems," said Nick Palmer.
