Terberg OmniDEL Automatic Low Level Bin Lift

Think about life in the day of an average bin lift, first of all there's the early starts where operators might expect you to lift a heavy container without you even getting the chance to warm up. Further abuse can be hurled at you throughout your day as your subjected to a constant stream of all manner of materials in all sizes of domestic and trade containers. Then there's the prospect of having your lower regions bumped into kerbs or bollards and receiving heavy handed abuse directed at your control buttons.

Terberg OmniDEL Automatic Low Level Bin Lift

Not easy is it ?, but if you’re lucky enough to be a Terberg OmniDEL bin lift that been designed to cope with the rough and tough of today’s waste handling collections and the operators using you have been trained correctly then the day’s work becomes a breeze.

One such example of product and process working together is at South Tyneside Council and their recent fleet of Ros Roca RCV bodies fitted with Terberg’s fully automatic OmniDEL bin lifts. Commissioned in August 2006, the fleet of nine OmniDEL’s, together with two Terberg Trojan trade lifts and a further two TCA-DE high level binlifts culminate in a flexible fleet that provides South Tyneside with the means in which to provide their waste collection service.

However, it was not only the product that won the heart of South Tyneside’s Fleet Manager Ray Hepburn. The comprehensive operator training programme and the facility to have an in-house Terberg certified Operator Trainer were major factors in the decision to go Terberg.

Speaking to Ray Hepburn, he had this to say, “South Tyneside Council made the decision to use the OmniDEL bin lift based on several factors, especially the quality build of the product, but we were also very impressed by Terberg’s training programme, particularly the depth and quality of the supporting documentation on offer to us from Terberg. The reality of being able to have a certified in-house Operator Trainer and to also have our workshop staff undergo technical training has effectively laid the foundation stones on which we’ve built what has been thus far, a near flawless service. We’ve operated with Terberg equipment now for over 10 years and with each new product comes the opportunity for us to work smarter, safer and more efficiently.”

Since bringing the OmniDEL binlifts into operation the North East council has trained over 162 personnel as Approved Operators under Terberg’s Level 1 Operator Training scheme. The trainer for the majority of these people has been Ian Ogle, Operations Supervisor for South Tyneside. Ian is certified by Terberg as a Operator Trainer for the OmniDEL bin lift. Ian was initiated into the ranks of what stands at over 260 customer-based Terberg certified trainers at the time of writing. By giving up valuable weekend time on a Saturday morning, Ian was trained on the day by one Terberg’s three Field Based Training Specialists, Paul Rochester, and managed to complete training for over 45 people on the same day by running consecutive sessions.

“By using the comprehensive media pack provided by Terberg I am able to provide Operator Training as and when our organisation demands it whether it be due to staff changes or senior management on ‘job swap’ duties. The quality and content of the literature allows me to provide training that is consistent and relevant. I’m confident that the knowledge imparted by me onto our operators, together with the Technical Training that both workshop personnel and myself have undergone has been a major contributory factor to the significant reduction in accidents and near misses not to mention the reduction in downtime. No other training programmes for similar products come close to what is offered by Terberg and this shows in our results”, says Ian.

In just over six months since commissioning of the OmniDEL fleet South Tynside Council have required minimal telephone service assistance and no unnecessary field service engineer visits, this is in contrast to organisations where the Terberg product operator training and technical training has not been embraced and sometimes necessitates field service engineer visits to solve ‘non-problems’ related to unfamiliarity with the OmniDEL product.

To summarise his delight in the performance of the OmniDEL product and training together with the proactive attitude at South Tyneside Council, Terberg’s Managing Director Tim Conlon has these parting words, “It’s fantastic to see that the concentrated efforts at Terberg to develop what we believe is an industry leading training package have proven to be a worthwhile investment. It is also reinforcement to our belief in the build quality and reliability of the OmniDEL range of products. The reduction in accident rates, downtime and absence of service calls observed at South Tyneside is testament to the achievable operational goals that can be scored through the close working relationships that we hold with many of our customers. “
