The TEOM monitor has been for many years the preferred monitor for PM10 and PM2.5 particulate matter. It is the only monitor which actually measures the mass of the particles by first principles of physics.
The tapered element oscillates at a frequency which is reduced as particles build up on the filter at its tip. The reduction in frequency is directly proportional to the mass of the particles collected. The TEOM can be programmed to operate at any temperature however as a default value the system operates at 50 deg C as at this temperature no water is likely to affect the measurements even in the most humid places on earth. This is very important as the mass of water in each cubic meter of air is many tmies greater than the particles we wish to measure and we must therefore ensure the water does not affect the measurement. Because of this heating the TEOM can lose semi volatile particulate material (if present) and for clients wishing to measure these semi volatile species we recommend the FDMS option which avoids heating the sample to remove water and instead uses a permeation dryer and a self referencing system to actually measure the semi volatile species as they volatalise from the filter.
