Award-winning Midlands firm champions quality solar-power installation
9 November 2009, News release from Advantage West Midlands
In just three years, a Birmingham firm has become recognised as a high-integrity, new technology, installation business, fast becoming a UK-leader in the marketing of domestic solar power installations.
In 2006, Mark Clemson's manufacturing knowledge and Colin Strong's 20-year, central heating engineering experience, combined to launch Birmingham-based New World Solar (NWS). Their solar-power, installation business-plan aimed to offer installation of high-quality equipment, offering a potentially significant positive environmental impact.
Their plan also envisaged integrating supply-chains, meeting high-end health and safety standards and achieving a positive social impact. In a market, susceptible to unprofessional operators, their research guided them to offer a combination of leading-edge products, backed by excellent skills and service, positioning NWS as a high-quality brand.
Birmingham City Council's aim both to relieve fuel poverty and provide environmentally friendly, energy solutions, enabled NWS to tender for the authority's deprived Summerfield Estate eco-project. As a result NWS retro-fitted half the solar panel installations of the first phase. Supervised by Operations Manager, Mick Bracey, 130 homes were completed so effectively that NWS won the entire second phase.
Wide-ranging contracts followed, both for solar panel and solar-powered photo-voltaic (PV) electricity-generation installations. Locations included Sandwell's Warm Zone, Northfield's Eco-Centre, plus community centres, swimming pools, fire and police stations, as well as private housing. Environmental standards' accreditation, ISO 14001, further endorsed NWS' professional credibility and underpinned collaboration with British Gas.
Subsequent registration under the national Micro-generation Certificate Scheme (MCS) certified that NWS, as an official micro-generation installer, conformed to leading consumer protection standards. With its core-team backed by skilled tradesmen, selected to uphold its quality standards, NWS' social impact objectives also saw it equip trainees from the Jericho Foundation with skills to help them forge independent lives.
MCS-registration enabled NWS to join the Government-supported Low Carbon Buildings Programme, which helps householders install solar electricity and heat generation. This also enables them to benefit from forthcoming 'Clean-Energy Cash-backs', or Feed-In Tariffs (FITs), which will see energy suppliers buying from small-scale producers.
As part of the Summerfield Partnership - together with Birmingham City Council, Urban Living, Family Housing Association and local residents - NWS jointly won the 2009 Public Sector National Energy Efficiency Award. Its consequent reputation has seen its customer-base widen and its participation in Retrofit 2050 - a major Midlands initiative to put "social housing on course for 2050."
Through putting quality before quantity, NWS faces the challenge of success. Although solar heating panels have dominated progress to date, FIT legislation will stimulate significant PV-sector growth. Despite environmental market-expansion, anticipated to reach £1trillion pa by 2020, NWS will still pursue its balanced agenda.
Having begun to achieve significant environmental impact through installing high-quality, solar-energy products, NWS seeks to explore more locally-based supply-chain integration of both products and services. Positive social impact ambitions have prompted it to stimulate local school pupils' awareness of climate change at "Entrepreneur Weeks."
Marketing Director, Mark Clemson, says:
"Significant progress in just three years has brought us to an exciting stage. We particularly appreciate Advantage West Midlands' work as a catalyst in facilitating constructive networking with like-minded businesses and their help with marketing."
