The Ashley Centre's Waste Management Review Worth Its Weight In Recycling Material
14 May 2012, News release from Compact & Bale Ltd
The Ashley Centre in Epsom was launched 30 years ago but despite undergoing many changes over the decades the centre's waste operation had not changed since day one. So when Bobby Rafajec joined as the new Operations Manager, he was quick to put the centre through a full and thorough waste management review.
Before the review was undertaken, The Ashley Centre recycled no polythene films (like garment wrap from clothing stores, etc) and their cardboard was collected in wheelie bins, crushed in an old static compactor and sold on for recycling at a nominal price per tonne.
Bobby had previously worked with Compact & Bale Ltd at the Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Edgware. "I found their service to be friendly, reliable and very competitive in relation to other service providers," he recalls. The fact that Compact & Bale is an approved Savills supplier also had a bearing on Bobby's decision to use them. "As part of the Savills group we are encouraged to use contractors from the "Contractor Plus" database. This ensures that contractors working on site meet all Health & Safety obligations ensuring safe working practices at all times" he says. Compact & Bale also provides waste and recycling equipment and services at a number of other Savills' centres.
After analysing the cost savings and income generation that could be achieved by renting new machinery, The Ashley Centre embarked on a 3 year total waste management contract with Compact & Bale for the provision of "zero landfill" general waste collections for two compactors and the purchase of both baled cardboard and polythene also including the rental of:
-1 x Durapac CB-44 semi-automatic horizontal baler with bin lifter for cardboard baling
-1 x Durapac CB-52SA vertical mill size baler for polythene baling
-1 x Durapac LCS 10-2.5 counterbalance bale stacker
-1 x Durapac CB-28 sealed portable compactor for general waste
All the machines are rented on a fully comprehensive maintenance contract that provides total peace of mind and ensures that they are kept in top working order. As part of the contract Compact & Bale traded in The Ashley Centre's old compactor and wheelie bins that were decommissioned at the same time as the new equipment was installed, providing a seamless transition on-site.
With the Durapac CB-44 horizontal baler and electric bale stacker the centre is now able to stack and store a full load of mill size bales in only a part load floor space. In storing full loads the Ashley Centre now receives 233% more income for their cardboard, an expected £7,000 increase per annum. The vertical CB-52SA baler will be used to produce mill size polythene bales that are purchased and collected at the same time as the cardboard bales saving and earning the centre even more money each year.
Compact & Bale provides a same day or next day "on demand" collection service for the centres two general waste compactors, operating six days per week. This enables the centre to run the machines until properly full so to maximise payloads, minimise collection frequencies and cut costs. Changing from their previous contractor's "schedule" collection service ensures that both compactors are collected when full rather than part full. Cost savings on general waste are as yet unknown but already the centre has seen a drop in general waste collections from once a week to once every 16 days which should mean at least a 50% drop in general waste collections and so charges.
Additionally, all general waste goes to a plant that sorts and processes waste for energy recovery (Refuse Derived Fuel) and is so "Zero Landfill".
Manuel Militao and Albert Oades, who have clocked up nearly 60 years between them as Service Operators at The Ashley Centre, have quickly adapted to the new waste management and recycling operation and take pride in showing how easy it is to make and store bales. They too are impressed and delighted with the new systems reduction in general waste collections.
When asked about whether there will be more types of recycling Bobby would consider for the centre he says, "Absolutely, we have a wide variety of retailers at the centre that generate different types of recyclable materials, which we hope to include within our recycling initiative for the future."
Compact & Bale Ltd supplies a comprehensive range of specialist waste and recycling machinery together with a full waste and recycling collection service throughout the UK. Other services the company offers include machinery servicing and repairs, spare parts and all baling consumables.
Bobby Rafajec says "I would certainly recommend Compact & Bale as a service provider. I have worked with the company at a previous site and managed to achieve 0% of all waste generated going to landfill, which I am confident will be achieved at The Ashley Centre. I feel the company are genuinely passionate about what they do and this is reflected in the service which they provide."
