Weston Favell Shopping Centre Mill Size Baler - 'Recycling almost 4 Times the Amount in Just 2 Months'
2 August 2006, News release from Compact & Bale Ltd
When Terry Creedy stepped into the role of Operations Manager six months ago at Weston Favell Shopping Centre (managed by Spen Hill Management Ltd) he knew that one of his first tasks was to improve the centre's waste management system and reduce costs.
Terry has been in the shopping centre management industry for years and had already done his homework in shopping around for prices.
'I needed a company that understood the unique demands of the shopping centre environment and who could provide the best equipment, consumables, service and recycling collections all under one roof. I'd heard of Compact and Bale previously through their work with Lakeside Shopping Centre and knew their prices were reasonable. With their additional expertise it made the waste review and planning much easier,' says Terry.
The centre had a waste compactor for garbage but was collecting 2.5 tonne of cardboard each month in a closed 35yd2 skip. The cardboard had to be flat packed into the skip which the contractor would then remove every 2 weeks or so. As well as paying the contractor for each collection they were also paying for the bin rental too.
'I'd had a small baler on trial so I knew I needed a baler to bale both cardboard and plastic,' says Terry. 'Dino from Compact & Bale undertook a detailed analysis of the waste stream and identified that I needed a far larger machine than the one I had on trial. They supplied a Durapac CB-52 Semi Automatic vertical mill size baling press and in just two months we have increased our recycling from 10% to 35%.'
With its semi-automatic operation and the ability to adjust baling pressure to suit cardboard and plastic at the push of a button, the CB-52 has made it easy for the centre to bale plastic and cardboard in the same machine. A cage was built to segregate the plastic and now every week two 450kg bales are produced. 'The compactor used to get emptied every week with about 8 tonnes of rubbish,' says Dino from Compact and Bale Ltd 'It now gets emptied every 19-22 days, so instead of 52+ pick ups a year they now only have 28+ pick ups. The result is that Weston Favell now receives handsome revenues for the baled plastic and cardboard through our recycling services division and they've reduced the amount of waste going to landfill.'
'We're probably saving about £8-10,000 per year because of these changes which more than pays for the baler. And included in these savings we now receive paid revenue for the baled materials whilst using the same amount of labour,' enthuses Terry 'The site is a lot cleaner there's no double handling and the service we get from Compact and Bale is very good. We definitely intend to have a long term relationship with them.'
