Warden Biomedia Chosen For New Severn Trent Wastewater Plant
13 April 2010, News release from Warden Plastics Limited
Random filter media from Warden Plastics have been chosen to provide ultra-efficient and cost-effective aerobic treatment in new ATUs for Severn Trent Water.
The aerated treatment units are being manufactured and supplied by Haith Industrial. Severn Trent Water will be installing them as part of a project to expand wastewater treatment capacity in the Melbourne area of Derbyshire.
The excellent ventilation and high voidage performance of the Warden Bioball and Biofil media make them extremely effective in wastewater treatment applications. They are injection-moulded in polypropylene with specific design features to increase the efficiency of the biological process.
Triangular fins increase the total surface area and encourage the formation of the biological films of bacteria, protozoa and fungi which will eat and biologically break down the organic content. The design also ensures high voidage to prevent blocking that might otherwise slow down the process. The serrated edges of the fins enables them to interlock in the filter bed giving excellent mechanical strength.
With these purpose-designed features the media in the Warden Plastics range are an excellent alternative to traditional mineral-based media and are perfect for overcoming problems of overloading in established trickling filter beds.
David Evans, project manager at Haith Industrial said, "The Warden biomedia were a natural choice for this project as they have high efficiency rates and are also very cost-effective and long-lasting."
There are five types of spherical and tube-shaped random filter media in the Warden Plastics range. The products chosen by Haith Industrial for this project are both spherical-shaped products: Biofil (surface area 120m2/m3) - and Bioball (surface area of 210m2/m3).
Other products in the Warden Plastics range include Biomarble spherical-shaped biomedia with a surface area of 300m2/m3 (suitable for biological wastewater treatment plants of different sizes serving new housing developments, commercial premises and single dwellings) and two sizes of Biopipe (tube-shaped media with internal fins designed for use in aquatic applications ranging from fish-farming pools to garden fishponds or large tanks).
