STS SMF4 Fluorimeter used in microbial studies

To what extent can portable fluorescence spectroscopy be used in the real-time assessment of microbial water quality?

The STS Instruments SMF4 portable fluorimeter has been used in an extensive study to determine water quality and establish a correlation between the fluorescent output and microbial presence.

The work carried out under funding by the UK ESPRC looked at the water samples obtained in South Africa and the UK and compared the results with standard bench top fluorimeters.

The SMF4 has a paired wavelength emission and excitation filters which are designed to identify Trytophan like fluorescence which is shown to be an excellent indicator of faecal pollution in water courses.

Applications apart from research include monitoring river water quality, BOD equivalent testing and identification of cross connected rain water and foul water sewers.

The SMF4 is manufactured in the UK by STS Instruments Ltd.
