Exova meets highest asbestos fibre testing levels
14 December 2010, News release from Exova
The Exova testing laboratory in Runcorn has extended its national accreditation to include asbestos fibre testing in soils.
This extension, to ISO 17025 of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), covers the identification of asbestos in samples where it is possible to pick out discrete pieces of asbestos containing materials and also where asbestos is present as dispersed fibre in the soil.
Prior to this the laboratory held the accreditation for the identification of asbestos in building materials.
Asbestos was a popular construction material used widely until it was discovered that the inhalation of asbestos fibres causes significant health risks. Since then, regulations around the world have been introduced for the management of asbestos in the workplace.
The Exova Runcorn laboratory is a well-respected provider of soil and water testing services for the environmental sector which includes a number of leading global consultant clients.
Pam Chadwick, facility manager, commented: "Asbestos contaminated soil must be treated extremely seriously as exposure to asbestos fibres can lead to fatal diseases.
"By extending our accreditation we are adding value to our clients' products guaranteeing the traceability of our results and ensuring our asbestos testing services provide assurance that building materials are safe and meet national and international standards."
Exova's asbestos testing services isolate and identify all types of asbestos in virtually all types of materials including cements, vermiculite, insulating materials, floor tiles, and ceiling tiles.
UKAS is the sole national accreditation body recognised by government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.
Accreditation by UKAS demonstrates the competence, impartiality and performance capability of these evaluators.
In the UK, Exova is able to offer building surveys to identify type, location and condition of asbestos containing materials and air monitoring to ensure workplace safety. Exova holds ISO 17025 accreditation for atmospheric sampling, fibre counting and asbestos testing in bulk materials; as well as ISO 10720 accreditation for asbestos surveying.
