Cost-Effective Desalination Solutions From ACWA
15 June 2010, News release from ACWA Services
For almost twenty years Air, Water and Effluent treatment specialist ACWA has been providing bespoke, optimised solutions to some of the Middle East's flagship desalination projects.
The company's first success in the region was a prestigious contract in Yemen to provide potable water for international oil and gas exploration and production company Canadian Occidental Petroleum (now Nexen Inc.). Its second contract, an offshore island potable water plant for Yemen's Ministry of Defence, consolidated its reputation as a trusted partner with formidable expertise across a wide variety of fields.
ACWA has been at the heart of projects in Yemen, Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and Palestine, and is currently undertaking O&M (operations and maintenance) contracts at a number of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plants around the world, notably the luxury Palm Jumeirah development in Dubai.
ACWA has extensive experience of treating some of the world's most challenging seawaters in terms of handling fine silt and other problems such as the increasingly-common marine red algae, which plagues some locations off the Gulf Coast and is increasingly causing serious water quality issues for desalination plants.
As a consequence of such issues, ACWA has utilised ultrafiltration as a pre-treatment at some of its most recent installations. This effectively prevents contaminants from reaching the heart of the process, the critical reverse osmosis membranes.
To further guarantee the robustness of its systems, the company's RO membranes are themselves manufactured from specialist materials such as PTFE and PVDF, which are used in applications requiring the highest purity, strength and resistance to aggressive solutions.
ACWA is now actively developing a range of new cost-effective pre-treatment solutions to enable clients to reduce energy costs and chemical consumption, minimise plant footprint and improve the overall efficiency of the plant whilst increasing the lifetime of the RO elements.
ACWA Emirates General Manager, Gary Jackson says: "The Middle East is a key market for ACWA, and our commitment to provide the best possible service to our valued clients in this area is well-known. We will continue to focus on high-quality, cost-effective, tailored solutions as we move forward.
It is gratifying to note that the Region's main customers are acknowledging ACWA's expertise in this area and as such ACWA have recently submitted a tender for FEWA's project in Al Zawrah, a 10 MIGD, SWRO Desalination Plant."
