Envar and FLI Energy sign £30M Anaerobic Digestion deal

Although full details of the deal have not been released, Envar has confirmed FLI Energy's status as the sole Turnkey provider for all of its AD plants in the UK and Ireland, including site infrastructure, buildings, pre-treatment, digestion, CHP, grid connection and other relevant services.

FLI Energy of Letchworth Herts, part of the FLI Group, a multi-disciplined provider of environmental and sustainable energy solutions throughout the UK, offer energy generation from organic substrates via anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas technologies digesting food waste plus industrial and agricultural feed stocks.

FLI Energy will provide Envar with a full Turnkey Package for all of its AD plant development rollout, working in conjunction with its AD technology partners HoSt BV, Holland and BAL GmbH, Germany and UK-based specialist consultants and contractors together with FLI's in house resources.
AD involves the production of Biomethane using naturally occurring micro-organisms which break down biodegradable organic material in the absence of oxygen. The gas produced is either combusted in a combined heat and power (CHP) engine to produce electricity and heat for use on site or export to the electricity grid or alternatively the gas can be upgraded and cleaned for export to the gas grid.

Envar's projects span the full range from medium-sized AD plants on farms to high end AD plants digesting food waste with complex waste reception and pre-treatment systems with throughput capacities of 25,000 - 60,000 tonnes pa.
"Many of their projects will involve complex situations that are likely to take longer to get through regulatory and planning processes and that's where FLI Energy's experience and expertise is vital", explained Micheal Geary, FLI Energy's Business Development Director who himself is no stranger to the planning and regulatory processes involved, given his 15 years experience leading waste management infrastructure development.
Bill Elliott Envar's Executive Chairman explained that Envar is responsible for sourcing project sites, negotiating with local authorities / co-developers which include farmers looking to develop projects on their farms and operating the plants. In the short term Envar have targeted a total AD tonnage in excess of 350,000 tonnes of feedstock across 12 to 14 sites and are well under way with this initial target.
The Envar team has selected FLI Energy to ensure that each plant is utilising proven technology and is purpose-built for the waste it is contracted to handle and that it is built on time and to budget. "One of the most critical things for Envar is timing and dependability", added Mr Elliott; "we have to be working with a company that are able to react and assist us get the plants through planning, then get them designed, build and operating in order that the finances start to flow back to the investors from the plants. FLI Energy's superior technology coupled with timing and efficient service is vital to us".
David Border, Envar's technical expert who had earlier been tasked with selecting suitable technologies for Envar's roll-out of AD started initially with a list of more than 60 companies, most based on the European mainland. He finally reduced this down to FLI Energy as the one selected company. Mr Border added; "FLI offer the benefit of proven AD technology coupled with a 20-year track record of providing waste and environmental infrastructure in the UK".
To complement their in house expertise, FLI Energy have exclusive agreements in place with HoSt BV of the Netherlands who are the Dutch market leaders pioneering in mixed waste wet AD technologies and with BAL GmbH of Germany for dry digestion technology. "The combination of superior technologies and locally based UK Contracting and Project Delivery experience and resources put FLI Energy well ahead of the AD tourists arriving daily from Europe hoping to work with UK representatives without proven capability", added Mr Border.
