SITA UK reduce waste to landfill with Road Sweepings & Gully Arisings Plant

Road Sweepings from across the Midlands are now to be recycled rather than sent to landfill following the installation of a road sweepings and gully arisings recycling plant at SITA UK's Neatchells Lane facility in Wolverhampton.

SITA UK is a recycling and resource management company who are known for providing innovative solutions throughout the UK and in 2010 it managed more than eight million tonnes of waste through a network of recycling, composting and landfill facilities.

Prior to the installation of the CDEnviro plant all of the material which currently passes through the facility was taken directly to landfill. It is now estimated that 98 per cent of the road sweepings that pass through the plant will be recycled for use in various elements including sand, washed aggregate and compostable material which will be recovered from the incoming road sweeping waste using the latest technology. This facility will now process more than 40,000 tonnes of road sweepings each year which would have previously been landfilled.

The 15 tonne-per hour road sweepings and gulley waste recycling system provided to SITA UK includes a full water treatment system. Following extensive material testing there were several new pieces of equipment developed including a bespoke material specific feed hopper arrangement, along with a RotoMax 60R high attrition system specifically designed to handle this heavily contaminated material.

Through this recycling process, SITA UK can help their clients to achieve their recycling targets while also reducing their requirement for virgin aggregate and increases composting volumes.

The plant has now been in operation for five months and continues to run smoothly.
Tim Hughes, Strategic Development Manager at SITA UK, said: "We are very pleased with the performance of the plant to date and we have received superb service and support given by CDEnviro to date. Prior to purchasing the plant we examined the other recycling plant offerings in the market but after visiting other CDEnviro installations we were satisfied that theirs was the technically superior option".

Commenting on the installation, Chris Male, Regional Processing Area Manager for SITA UK said "The investment will allow us to recover recyclable materials from road sweeping waste that is currently landfilled. The recycled sand and aggregates can be reused by many of our customers in road construction, pipe bedding materials or blended with rock salt and used with grit on roads in the winter months. This is another example of the efforts SITA UK goes to in achieving our purpose of protecting the environment by putting waste to good use"
