3M Launches New Pipe Renewal Liner With Live Testing Event

Representatives from major water companies and utility contractors travelled to Doncaster to witness the first UK application of a new, specially formulated resin pipe liner from diversified technology company 3M.
Scotchkote Pipe Renewal Liner 2400 from 3M has been developed to provide the next generation of in situ resin lining. Scotchkote Liner 2400 is formulated using advanced aliphatic polyurea chemistry, which helps to minimise water absorption and extend service life.
Yorkshire Water hosted the demonstration at a length of abandoned pipeline near Doncaster, with the specially developed application rig operated by Schur Ltd. The site management of the trial was controlled by Balfour Beatty Utility Services Ltd. The speed and ease of lining and the gap spanning properties of the liner were demonstrated by lining lengths of pipe featuring several gaps and voids. The product is capable of spanning voids up to 8mm and gaps up to 5mm to help minimise water loss and reduce operational costs.
The approval of Scotchkote Liner 2400 under Regulation 31(4) (a) of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000 means it is now approved for use in drinking water pipelines in 20 countries. The product is suitable for BS:EN ISO 11295:2010 Class D (non-structural) linings and can also be applied at specified lining thicknesses to help provide structural enhancement in excess of Class B (semi-structural) requirements for potable water pipe lining applications. Approval from the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) was achieved in September.
Paul Woolvine of the 3M Infrastructure Protection Division commented: "Scotchkote Liner 2400 is a very different resin proposition as it offers both water delivery enhancement and structural enhancement properties. For customers, the new product means faster application and drying times, allowing the pipe to be returned to service in one hour, as well as reduced infrastructure disruption as fewer trenches are required."
Steve Taylor of Yorkshire Water, who managed the trial and demonstration, said: "Our aim for the day was to push the rig and liner to the limits, testing different methods throughout the process to determine best practice. We are excited about the prospect of using Scotchkote Liner 2400 as part of our AMP6 strategy.
"We are very happy with how the trial came together on the day and the performance of the 2400 exceeded our expectations. The pressure testing carried out on site went well with a section of 8mm lining holding 10 bar and then briefly taken up to 15 bar."
Ian Johnson, stream manager at Yorkshire Water, added: "We're keen to further explore the potential of Scotchkote Liner 2400 by conducting field trials on live pipelines, as the long-term benefits are clear. Yorkshire Water maintains 32,000km of pipe length in total, including some aging assets, and serviceability is a big issue for us. The liner will be hugely beneficial in allowing us to repair rather than replace, allowing us to treat more lines and spend money more effectively as well as reducing interruptions for our customers."
To ensure that the application of Scotchkote Liner 2400 is to a consistently high standard, the product must be applied by contractors approved by both WRc-NSF and 3M, through 3M certified lining rigs.
