Fognam Down - Nitrate Removal Scheme

Christ Kennicott Water Technology Ltd (CKWT) successfully completed the first of their UK Advanced AmberpackTM Nitrate Removal Projects during February 2006.
The Thames Water Fognam Down Nitrate Removal Scheme was awarded to CKWT in February 2005 by Thames Water Utilities framework partner, Gleeson Construction Services Ltd (GCS). This new works is part of the Fognam Down and Ashdown Park Ground Water Treatment Works, which supply potable water to Thames Water customers in their western provinces area. These works are situated within 1km of each other near the picturesque village of Lambourn in West Berkshire. The new Fognam Down project involved the supply of a high rate, low waste, ion exchange nitrate removal plant to reduce nitrate concentrations in the feed waters from both of these water treatment works.
With a 53 week overall programme for the completion of this project at an existing operational site and a further agreement that beneficial use would be achieved by 31st December 2005 for the supply of fully treated nitrate reduced water, no time could be lost.
We are pleased to report that all key milestones were achieved on this project through the hard endeavours of all parties concerned. The new building was designed for this environmentally sensitive area by Thames Water and GCS under the AMP4 Performance Partnering arrangement. Construction of the new hard wood clad building was started and completed on time by GCS. CKWT's element, consisting of the design, supply, shop assembly, site installation and commissioning of a 3.59ML/D (149.6m3/h) Advanced AmberpackTM Ion Exchange Plant, including all ancillary equipment, electrics and controls, was also completed by the date required by Thames Water Utilities.
The 'Advanced AmberpackTM Nitrate Removal Process' supplied by Christ Kennicott Water Technology Ltd under an exclusive licence agreement with Rohm and Haas, was selected because it is very simple to operate and maintain, uses components that are readily available and produces the smallest possible waste stream volume. Thames
Water Utilities was attracted by these features as the plant was to be built in a remote location without a direct sewer connection. The plant also needed to be fully automatic and to be able to run with only an occasional visit from Thames Water's Operational staff. The low waste stream volumes and highly efficient operation achieved by the process are due to the fractal distribution system that is effective for both the high feed water flows and low regenerant flows experienced within the plant.
