Edina named biogas CHP engine provider in state-of-the art Waste to Energy plant.

Power generation specialist Edina has been awarded the contract to supply and install two biogas CHP (combined heat and power) engines, manufactured by MWM, at Allerton Waste Recovery Park.

The biogas is from an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant processing recovered organics as part of a new state-of-the art integrated waste management facility based at Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.  The facility will include a mechanical treatment plant, AD plant and an Energy from Waste plant for the treatment of residual household waste.

Allerton Waste Recovery Park was given the final go-ahead in September 2014. Amey will operate the facility on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council and the City of York Council for 25 years. Organics Waste Systems was selected to supply the AD plant and later awarded Edina the contract to supply both biogas CHP engines.

Scope of supply

Edina were chosen based on their unrivalled knowledge of the AD industry, having over 30 years' experience and proven track record in supplying a significant proportion of the recent AD plant installations across the UK.

The contract included two MWM biogas CHP engines comprising of a 1.2MWe TCG 2020 V12 engine and a 600kWe TCG 2016 V12 engine.  Both MWM engines will be fully containerised at Edina's manufacturing facility based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

Regional and economic benefits

With construction currently underway, the project is expected to be completed in 2017 and will house a dedicated visitor centre to educate local schools and the community promoting the positive impacts of waste to energy and encouraging participation.  The visitor centre will open when the plant is fully operational in early 2018.

It is anticipated that the new facility will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by up to 90% in the county.  Allerton Waste Recycling Plant will generate around 28.5MW electricity which is equivalent to 40,000 homes or more than the domestic needs of a town the size of Harrogate. The facility will deliver around 70 permanent skilled and semi-skilled jobs, as well as up to 400 jobs during the three year construction phase, and will add approximately £220m to the York and North Yorkshire economy over the life of the contract.

Edina is a leading power generation specialist providing CHP solutions to AD plants, industry and the Public Sector.  Edina is the sole UK and Ireland distributor for MWM and are world renowned for achieving maximum electrical and thermal efficiency, low operating and servicing costs and high reliability and availability of over 90%.
