Hiab demonstrates increased flexibility with Mobile Elevating Work Platform option
7 May 2013, News release from Cargotec UK Limited
Prominent on the Hiab stand at the CV Show (4H90) is a new development designed to significantly increase the applications that can be carried out by the company's highly regarded XS HiPro range of truck mounted cranes.
The Hiab Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) system gives XS cranes the added flexibility of attaching a personnel basket from which tasks can be performed safely at height and which fully meets the stringent European EN280 standard for this type of equipment.
This is a complete, certified solution for the crane and its control system along with the personnel basket itself. Quick and easy changeover from load handling attachments to the basket enables the crane to be used for a wide range of tasks that involve working at height, such as lighting column maintenance, tree surgery, or bridge inspections. A simple turn of the key switch on the control panel instantly changes the system to MEWP operation with all the different control and safety aspects which that involves.
The entire system bristles with safety features. The operative can maintain precise vertical and rotational speed control through the CombiDrive 2 remote control unit, for which the basket has a special holder, with maximum vertical speed limited to 0.4 metres/second and slewing speed to 0.7 metres/second in compliance with EN280. A fully variable stability monitoring system prevents operation of the crane if the stabilisers and outrigger arms are not in the correct position.
The basket, which can comfortably carry two people, is automatically levelled within a maximum inclination of 5º and has an external safety rail to prevent crushing, a non-slip self-draining floor, hooks for safety harnesses and a box in which to safely contain tools and materials. Should an emergency arise a push-button inside the basket instantly halts all movement and a manually operated pump enables the basket to be easily lowered to the ground if power is lost.
The model on the stand at the CV Show is the Hiab XS122E-3 HiPro which has a capacity within the 9 to 12 tonne/metre range and which features the latest SPACE 5000 intelligent electronics. This is essentially a computer that assists the operator by monitoring and providing vital information on all aspects of the crane's operation, such as continuously displaying the pressure in the cylinders.
Like all SPACE packages it includes Hiab's advanced Overload Protection System. This prevents dangerous overload situations arising by alerting the operator when the crane reaches 90% of its maximum capacity. Other safety features include a high boom warning should the driver forget to correctly park the crane, and the Operator Protection System (OPS), which creates a virtual safety cage that the crane cannot enter and which is activated as soon as the operator steps onto the platform.
Fault code information is also recorded within the SPACE computer to assist service technicians in fault finding and fast remedy. And the storage of load cycle data allows subsequent analysis by the customer on how the crane is being used, allowing opportunities for operational efficiency and safety improvements to be identified.
Amongst productivity enhancement features built into Hiab XS cranes is one known as Automatic Duty Control (ADC). The only one of its type on the market, ADC automatically boosts the maximum capacity of the crane during operation by around 10%. Automatic Speed Control (ASC) is another feature designed to deliver a stepless increase in lifting capacity of up to 10% and Manual Speed Control (MSC) also boosts capacity by 10% in one step by slightly reducing the speed of the inner and outer boom.
The Hiab XS range of cranes has been designed around a modular system that allows each crane to be almost purpose-built to a customer's individual requirements. They have choice on control systems so that their crane can be precisely tuned to deliver optimum performance in line with their needs. The high quality of build ensures durability and a long life with minimum downtime and safe operation is a paramount consideration at all points of the design, build and fitting process.
