Axtec Dynamic reduces trips by a third!
31 May 2005, News release from Axtec
Maximising profit is an important aim in any industry and D & E Roberts Recycling who operate a skip hire and recycling business in Leatherhead are no exception. Managing Director and owner, Dave Roberts spotted an opportunity to increase his profits in the shape of an Axtec Series 4000 Dynamic Axle Weighbridge.
Using the Axtec 4000, Roberts can maximise the load on his bulkers going to landfill. The impact of being able to weigh these vehicles out was staggering. In fact, so much difference has the system made that it has paid for itself in around 12 weeks and is now adding significantly to the company's bottom line.
"We did a trial over a period of six weeks, closely monitoring our loading" says Roberts "We found that we could shift the same cubic yardage of waste in 99 loads as we did previously in 159! That's more than a third fewer trips. The savings in journeys, fuel and wear and tear are quite something."
Major savings in trips are helping the company profits but that's not the only way the axle weighbridge has had an impact. The Axtec 4000 is stamped for Trade, which means Roberts can charge people by weight taking waste in, thus providing another important source of revenue. "We can charge local builders for what they bring in by the tonne now instead of guessing and with this system, there's no argument." He says.
"We're developing the site and always looking for ways to improve our efficiency," says Roberts
"We run aggregates out of our yard and wanted a means of charging our customers by weight but like everyone, space is at a premium so a full weighbridge was a non-starter"
Taking up considerably less space in a busy yard than a conventional weighbridge, the Axtec 4000 fulfils all the tasks required and, Roberts can use the whole of the yard for vehicle manoeuvring when the axle weighbridge is not being used.
Already widely used for Law enforcement within the UK, D & E Roberts are less than a mile from an enforcement machine at Junction 9 of the M25, and by many major fleet operators, the Axtec 4000 automatically provides individual axle weights as well as gross weight. This means that as well as using the gross weight for determining payment and maximising payload the axle weight information ensures vehicles are always legally laden.
Many plate weighbridges are unable to provide this vital information. Again, Roberts concurs. "Before we had the axle weighbridge, we were worried that we could be overloading the third axle of our 8-wheelers because there is a grab or hook-lift behind the cab which means the body is some way back. With a bit of experimentation, we now know how to distribute the load evenly between the second and third axles correctly so that we get maximum load and remain legal on our axle weights as well as gross weight."
Because of the critical nature of the approach concrete either side of the weighing platform, Roberts contracted the whole project to Axtec and couldn't be more pleased with the result. "They were slick, professional and we hardly knew they were here," says Roberts, "and any problems we encountered were dealt with quickly and swiftly by the guys on the site."
Simple to use, the Axtec 4000 requires no special skills or training. "Our operatives are no better or worse than any others and they've taken to this system quickly." Says Roberts.
Available in internal and external formats and with the full range of Axtec's peripherals to choose from, the Axtec 4000 can be configured to fit comfortably into any operation.
