Do you know your Energy usage?

Some very interesting research has been done in the UK about the energy usage at homes. In particular, the research has shown that the occupants' behaviour thwarts the best of plans made out by the designers to make the house more energy efficient. Simple things, like leaving windows open will have a large impact on the home energy consumption as some 47% of all home energy use is for – unsurprisingly – heating.

So what can be done about all that? The researcher, Dr Janda, who is based at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute is quoted on the BBC website as giving some good ideas. First of all, she thinks that, by letting people know what they consume the energy on, will alter their behaviour. Her example covers anything from heating to fridges and freezers – well, in our house, it would be the teenager use of hot water!
