Picking out a winner from innovation’s brightest stars

Three companies with groundbreaking products are in the final stretch of the race for the Water Industry Achievement Awards' second Innovative Technology Award. Natasha Wiseman checks out their form

Three finalists have been selected for the 2008 Innovation Award, part of the Water Industry Achievement Awards co-hosted by WWT and its sister magazine WET News. The award recognises products and technologies, or new applications for existing technologies, that bring benefit to the industry, or are an improvement on products and technologies already available.

Mobility is the key attraction of two of the technologies featured.

A partnership between engineering consultancy RPS Water and software specialist eSay has brought hand-held PDAs for leak detection to the market. The device enables field engineers to report incidents directly to head office and is already delivering tangible efficiency benefits to water utilities. In a different way, Siltbuster’s mobile wastewater treatment technology has brought flexibility to on-site treatment in a range of applications. The third finalist, Aquabio, has already demonstrated the capacity of its membrane bioreactor system for water reuse in a beetroot-processing plant.

Companies will have the opportunity to demonstrate their short-listed technology at 10.30am on Wednesday 21 May, during the IWEX seminars.

The winner will be announced at the Water Industry Achievement Awards dinner at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre. Watch out for coverage in the June issue of WWT.
