Plant hirer supplies Case machine for Hounslow site

Civic communities through the UK are striving to make more efficient use of equipment to recycle a greater percentage of commercial and residential waste. The London Borough of Hounslow Waste Transfer Site - Spacway is one example of good management practice, where plant hire company John Hanlon & Co Ltd is playing an important role.

The Spacway Transfer Station at Feltham serves six London boroughs processing in excess of 1,000 tonnes of commercial waste per week. By selective sorting, the site is currently recycling 20% of trade waste but Site Manager, Steve Wells, is aiming for not less than 25% and believes that 50% is achievable.

To help process and select the amount of material coming in each day, a few months ago they took delivery of a Case CX210 material handler specially configured with an elevating cab and an Ardennes grapple. The machine is on contract hire from Hanlon, which, according to Steve Wells is the best option as they know exactly what the operating costs will be and do not have to worry about maintenance and downtime is not an option.

With material coming in constantly from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm every day throughout the year (except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day), as Steve Wells says: “We can’t afford

for the machine to break down as the build

up is too quick.” Hanlon uses its many years of expertise in ensuring that the machine

is available at all times by offering a 24-7

call-out service.

High-rise cab

Mathew Hanlon said, “Since the Case CX210 came on site there have been no problems. We made minor modifications to the machine to suit the application such as additional engine cooling and air filtration. The high-rise cab was fitted by CRMS, the Case dealer. Maintenance is a priority due to the demands on the machine and we are required to ensure that the machine is dry and oil free.”

When doing selective sorting or loading the recycling bins, the cab, which can be raised to 4.8 metres, gives the operator a clear view over the material. The high-rise cab is hydraulically raised thereby eliminating the need for the operator to climb into the cab.

The 22.5 tonnes material handler is powered by an Isuzu electronically controlled Tier II diesel delivering 105kW/1950rpm. Automatic engine preheating enables optimum and immediate operation as soon as the working temperature is achieved. This effectively reduces wear on the engine and hydraulics minimises smoke and lowers sound levels.

The maximum reach of 10.1 metres and dump height of 6 metres meets the requirements of the variety of tasks for which the material handler is used.

Sound levels are also low on the CX210, an important consideration when the machine is working close to site employees. The depot employs 13 full time people and some agency workers according to demand.

Each day, the material handler loads as many as eight 20~25 tonne bulk transporters. Landfill goes to Bedford and selected material goes to various recyclers. The site has plans to expand its facilities by approximately 50% to enable it to cope with increased volumes of waste material.

There is also a Case 721 wheel loader fitted with 2.5 m3 straight edge bucket, which is used for cleaning up and stockpiling.

Recycling progress

Good site management with the right equipment and support services has enabled the Feltham recycling site to make good progress in achieving its objectives. The amount of material recycled through the site in 2004 was almost double that of the previous year and the site is on target to make further improvement in 2005.

The operators have had a good relationship with John Hanlon & Co.Ltd for over seven years. “The importance of the relationship cannot be over emphasised,” says Mr Hanlon, “We have to be aware of the customers needs as they change and provide the most appropriate equipment, ensure that it has the level of reliability demanded and provide additional support as it may be required.”

With a fleet of over 140 machines, 30 years’ experience, and 50% of its rental business coming from waste handling and recycling, John Hanlon is able to service customers throughout the UK.

As a result of the good experience with the Case CX210, the company has placed an order for a second machine through CRMS.
