Yorwaste, the independently run waste management arm of North Yorks County and the City of York Councils, has taken delivery of an L110E Volvo loading shovel for its Catterick waste transfer station.

The new machine comes equipped with 23.5 – 25 X Mine D2 tyres and a 4m high tip bucket. It is being used on site for loading out high-sided bulkers with domestic refuse and handling green waste for recycling on the newly commissioned composting pad.

The purchase of the L110E follows two Volvo machines supplied earlier in the year for Yorwaste’s operations at Rufforth – another L110E and an L120E. Both machines are doing similar duties albeit that the Rufforth operation handles inert materials such as wood, rubble and metals as well as green waste and aggregates for recycling.

Both the L110E and L120E loading shovels are powered by a Volvo 7-litre engine rated at 210hp and 224hp respectively. Maximum torque is achieved at just 1,400rpm, which provides excellent rimpull and full hydraulic power in the economy working range at 1,100- 1,600rpm, equating to fast response times and low fuel consumption.

Both the L110E and L120E feature an intelligent, load-sensing hydraulic system. Two variable piston pumps provide the exact flow and pressure required at any given moment. This means smoother operation, lower fuel consumption, quicker hydraulics and shorter working cycles. An integrated electronic network, Contronic, is provided for control and monitoring of operation and performance. The system’s three computers monitor operational functions in real time, store data for analysis and make it possible to reprogramme and update the machine’s various functions.

Operator comfort is maximised in the Volvo Care Cab II – besides the multi position seat, telescoping and tiltable steering wheel, ten outlets deliver climate-controlled air into the cab, and all intake and recirculated air passes through the main filter for a clean operating environment.
