Carillion appoints new MD for consulting business

Leading support services and construction company Carillion has appointed Richard Sykes as Managing Director for the company's consulting business

Richard joins Carillion following an 18-year career with Taylor Woodrow where he was most recently Executive Board Director responsible for Taylor Woodrow Construction Ltd operations in the UK and Europe.

A well-respected and recognised figure in the outsourcing industry, Richard is currently Chairman of the FMA (Facilities Management Association). He has extensive experience in leading the strategic growth of various businesses in highly competitive environments and a track record of developing double-digit growth. He is also skilled in driving organisational culture change and talent management.

Don Kenny, Executive Director of Carillion Business Services, said: “I am delighted to welcome Richard into Carillion. I am certain he will make a major contribution to the leadership of our business.

“Securing a leader of Richard’s calibre reflects Carillion’s ambition to expand its consulting proposition and bring additional value to its clients.”

A relatively new addition to the FTSE 250 company’s increasingly-extensive service offering, Carillion Consulting includes the market-leading brands Enviros, TPS and Schal which, between them, provide services through the lifecycle of the natural and built environment.

Taking over from Peter Portlock, who retires in April 2009, Richard will oversee the continuing integration strategy of the consulting business while retaining the identity of the current companies – Enviros became part of Carillion only in February 2008 following the group’s acquisition of Alfred McAlpine.

With a national network of offices, international reach and close to 1000 professional staff, Carillion Consulting’s multi-disciplinary services include architecture, design, environment, energy, health & safety, planning, security and project management.

The award-winning Carillion Consulting portfolio includes design at Barajas Airport Madrid – which won the RIBA Stirling Prize – and the new terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport; extensive support to a number of Ministry of Defence bodies; environmental, health and safety support to Sainsbury’s and, most recently, carbon footprinting services for Coca Cola

Clients include national and local government bodies and leading organisations in the defence, aviation, industrial, retail, property, energy and services sectors.
