Minister of state at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Sean Power visited the town to present a Green Flag for excellence in spreading the word about environmental issues.

The Green Schools Programme is part of an international initiative co-ordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education, a non-profit organisation that works to promote sustainable development through education.

Pupils have been instructed in issues such as waste management, energy and water supplies, as well as being encouraged to pass on the information to their peers and adults in the wider community.

Mr Power said: “Raising awareness is crucial and a number of communities are taking the initiative.

“The voices of the younger generation can have just as much influence as older generations, yet too often they go unheard.”

Some 70 per cent of Irish primary school are participating in the scheme.
