Daihatsu sells 3 of the UK’s 10 greenest cars

Motorists seeking to reduce their contribution to UK greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution and overall fuel consumption can find information on the web of the greenest cars currently available.

Publication of the figures in both print and web formats is the first recommendation put forth by the Cleaner Vehicles Task Force to be fulfilled. Published by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), New Car Fuel Consumption and Emission Figures July 1999 lists the top 10 petrol and diesel vehicles in terms of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Not surprisingly, the ‘greenest’ petrol cars tend to be compacts. They are, in order of CO2 emission and fuel consumption:

  • MCC Smart
  • Daihatsu Cuore
  • Perodua Nippa
  • Suzuki Swift
  • Daihatsu Sirion
  • Toyota Yaris
  • Suzuki Alto
  • Daihatsu Move
  • Vauxhall Corsa
  • Seat Arosa

In most cases, the top 10 diesel cars recorded CO2 emissions that were higher than the cleanest petrol cars. They are, in order of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption:

  • Seat Arosa
  • Volkswagen Lupo
  • Mercedes A
  • Ford Focus Tci
  • Audi A3
  • Volkswagen Bora
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Volkswagen Polo
  • Skoda Octavia
  • Seat Ibiza

Information regarding the tests undertaken to produce the figures and targets surrounding air and noise pollution are also on the web.
