Electric vehicle recharging scheme welcomed

A new scheme to launch recharging facilities for electric vehicles in the south-east of County Dublin has been welcomed by the Green Party.

The initiative from Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown council will see electric vehicle owners able to make use of charging points across the area, helping to promote the use of eco-friendly cars in the region.

This news comes ahead of the launch of a new motor tax system on July 1st, which will see all newly-registered vehicles pay tax based on the level of carbon emissions they produce.

Green Party councillor Gene Feighery said: “With rising fuel costs it is inevitable that people will be looking at alternatives and electric transport offers that.

“It is vital that local councillors take the lead and ensure that facilities are in place to encourage people to make the switch.”

A recent Sustainable Energy Ireland report called for the government to target businesses first when promoting the switch to electric fleet vehicles.
