Irish EPA offers funding for environmental technologies

The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be administering the ambitious research and innovation programme worth Euro 100m.

Currently, the EPA is offering research grants of up to Euro 10m for companies and researchers looking at areas like environmental technologies, waste, resource management, sustainable development, and environmental research data management.

Dr Mary Kelly, director general of the EPA, said: "The importance of research and innovation across the Irish economy is well recognised and is extremely important in the environmental area.

"Good quality research can provide the foundation for credible decision-making while technology and innovation can provide solutions to environmental problems.

"Rapid developments in science and technology present opportunities to apply innovative solutions to environmental problems and to enhance monitoring and assessment of the environment."

Dr Kelly added that the EPA hoped the programmes would explore the use of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology.

Recently, the Irish Government announced that it was offering more grants to agricultural businesses to encourage them to use environmentally-friendly technologies.
