Johnny helps offices get on the Ball

Celebrity scientist Johnny Ball was on hand to educate office workers on environmental issues this Tuesday as part of London Sustainability Week.

Full of his trademark infectious enthusiasm Mr Ball was guest speaker at the Making IT Sustainable event hosted by recycling promoters London Remade and manufacturer Brother at the Energy Clinic in the heart of the city.

Displays and exhibits provided information on how to take simple steps to improve efficiency while protecting the environment, with experts on hand to provide practical advice on how to implement changes.

Among the simple ideas promoted by the event was double-sided, or duplex, printing with the environmental and financial advantages clearly explained.

According to the organisers a London-wide switch to duplex printing could save 17.5 billion sheets of A4 paper every year, enough paper to wrap around the earth four times.

The event also demonstrated a sustainable office in action and offered a bring-back facility for waste electronic and electrical (WEE) goods, including used batteries and CDs, to enable visitors to recycle their waste office products and learn good practice.

Brother also used the event to outline the world’s toughest quality and environmental standard for office equipment, TCO ’99.

The event was aimed at IT workers, facilities managers, office managers, PAs and other office workers interested in learning more about the recycled products available, implementing an office recycling system and reducing levels of waste produced.
