Minister Hogan announces significant funding for environment projects

The minister for the environment, community and local government, Phil Hogan has unveiled a six figure funding pot for local environment initiatives, with local authorities providing match funding.

The funding scheme announced by the minister yesterday (September 28) will see Euro 395,000 funding for sustainable development projects provided by the government under the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Environmental Partnership Fund 2011. Meanwhile, match funding will also be provided by local authorities, which is anticipated to bring the shared potential partnership funding to a total of Euro 790,000.

Under the funding criteria, projects that support and complement local and national environmental policies in areas such as waste, biodiversity, climate change, air, water and sustainable development will be eligible to apply.

Commenting on the scheme, Mr Hogan said: "I am delighted to announce the Local Agenda 21 Partnership Fund for 2011. This Euro 395,000 Fund provides valuable assistance to local groups. It supports, at the grass roots level, efforts to improve the environment, to make our communities more sustainable and to increase general awareness of environmental issues."

Successful projects are also likely to attract funding from businesses and other organisations.

Last year 448 projects received funding from the LA21 fund, including biodiversity projects, environmental education programmes, waste reduction initiatives, and local environmental planning.

The deadline for applications is October 19 2011, and application forms are available from the department's website.
