Bord Gais Energy Supply has urged consumers to have their boiler serviced this summer as a means of reducing their carbon output, the Mayo Advertiser reports.

Regular servicing can increase the efficiency of their boilers, since the process involves the removal of carbon build-up and debris that can reduce effectiveness and result in higher bills.

This is imperative, the news source states, since most of the average household’s CO2 is derived from central heating boilers.

It goes on to cite Sustainable Energy Ireland’s (SEI) recently released statistic that each household in Ireland produces eight tonnes of CO2 a year.

According to SEI, the average household electricity used per person increased by 62% from 1990 to 2006.
