Sewerage scheme upgrade plans approved
Plans to upgrade the Castlecomer Sewerage Scheme have been given the go-ahead by Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government John Gormley.Mr Gormley has approved the plans from Kilkenny County Council, while also giving clearance for the drawing up of tender documents to help the scheme begin construction as quickly as possible.
The proposed upgrade refers to the existing wastewater treatment plant in Castlecomer and will provide the capacity to service an extra 67 acres of land currently zoned for housing under the County Development plan.
Mr Gormley said: "I have allocated a 40% grant for the project under my department's Water Services Investment Programme 2007 - 2009 where it is being funded as part of the Serviced Land Initiative.
"The balance of the cost of the Euro 4.5m scheme will come from development levies.
"The scheme will have very positive benefits for the local community by providing for sustainable and integrated growth in Castlecomer, while at the same time preserving environmental standards."
Castlecomer is a town in north County Kilkenny, in the province of Leinster.
