Responding to concerns raised by discoloration of water, reports of dead fish at Lough Owel and sales reps selling filtration devices door to door, county manager Dan McLoughlin said various authorities confirmed drinking water was safe.
Water quality is tested monthly by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which then forwards the results to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other bodies also take interest in the water supply.
Mr Mcloughlin said: “The Fisheries Board, the HSE, and the EPA are all happy with the water quality in Westmeath.
“We are engaged in ongoing work with the EPA and others to look at potential threats to Lough Owel.”
The Athlone Advertiser reported that the county manager pledged to make information of water quality more readily available by updating the website more regularly with information that was easier to process.
