ESBIE signs green contract with BT

ESB Independent Energy (ESBIE) has signed a contract to provide renewable energy to British Telecom (BT), reports indicate.

The firm is to supply the telecoms giant with some three million kilowatt hours of green energy, generated from renewable sources, the Irish Herald reports.

BT’s carbon footprint – which currently stands at 618 tonnes of CO2 in Ireland alone – is hoped to be cut dramatically through the initiative and falls in line with the firm’s commitment to cut its carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2020.

Liam Molloy, managing director of ESBIE, commented: “I am pleased that ESBIE will be making its contribution to BT’s environmental policy through the provision of wind power from our growing renewables portfolio.”

The deal is expected to be worth some €9 million and will involve the commissioning of 50 megawatts of new windfarms.

In related news, ESBIE recently signed a deal worth €48 million with the SWS Group for all the power output from a 22.5 megawatt windfarm in Limerick.
