Lebanese clean-up complete

The clean-up of a major oil spill caused by the bombing of a Lebanese power station has now been completed, at a cost of around US$5 million.

Over 17 million litres of oil were spilled into the Mediterranean when Israeli jet planes bombed the Jiyyeh power station during fighting last July.

Some 220 locals including fishermen affected by the spill were trained to help with the operation which saw oil removed from over 60 miles of contaminated coastline from Enfeh to the historic port of Byblos.

Funding and expertise came from the US Agency for International Aid.
