New paper sets out food production challenges

A report released later today will warn of the dangers of the world's dwindling food resources.

The report, Global Food and Farming Futures, asks how a future global population of nine billion people be fed sustainably.

The report examines the challenges of balancing future demand and supply sustainably without furthering the impact of climate change.

By 2030 food production will need to increase by 50% and this will have a huge impact on climate change if not managed well.

The report is expected to suggest using current technology such as GM crops to assist farmers in developing countries to store crops and avoid waste.

The report is the result of the study sponsored by the UK Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and Department for International Development (DFID) and will be presented to the departments today. Alison Brown
