US celebrity Erin Brockovich is new Aussie environmentalist

Australia has a new champion for environmental issues in the form of international environment and human rights crusader, Erin Brockovich.

She has launched a new organisation, Environmental Justice Society (EJS), with the aim of informing Australians about environmental issues and how to protect the Australian habitat.

The organisation is a collective of environmentalists including lawyers and academics with representatives from the World Wildlife Fund, and the University of Queensland.

Ms Brockovich said: "This country is at the beginning of a period of huge growth that will continue for decades to come and it's all driven by the resources in the ground."

"The EJS will act as a guardian of people's rights to a safe and healthy environment, and is aiming to help preserve Australia's pristine beaches, waterways, rainforests and wilderness for generations to come."

The organisation has launched a website which will interact with members of the public about their environmental concerns.

It will contain a knowledge centre to offer guidance and direction for individuals concerned about impact of businesses on the environment.

Ms Brockovich also announced the group's new Environmental Crusader Competition "to find Australia's Erin Brockovich". Alison Brown
