Nick Clegg berated over energy markets

Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was given a rough ride on the perceived lack of reforms to energy markets when he attended a gala dinner last night (May 18).

Confusion over the transformation to a tax of the CRC, huge changes to the Feed-In Tariff (FITs) and a feeling reforms to the energy market are dragging have the business community edgy.

With energy minister Chris Huhne this week announcing tough emissions targets, the business community also fear more taxation.

Speaking to an audience of around 1300 last night (May 18) senior business leaders CBI president, Helen Alexander, told Mr Clegg the Government’s ‘intentions have been good’, but it is ‘taking too long to get there’.

At the CBI’s annual dinner, Ms Alexander, said to Mr Clegg: “Energy is right at the top of our list, it’s at the front of everyone’s minds.

“The electricity market has to be reformed, you need to make sure the market not only encourages investment to secure our future supplies, but also works for industrial and other users.”
