This year the awards held last night (Febuary 3) at Mansion House, the working home of lord mayor London, Alderman Michael Bear, saw green building at its heart.

One of the most interesting winners was the world's first carbon-neutral theatre, the Arcola in Islington, who won the greening the third sector award for its work using fuel cells to run stage lights and cutting-edge low-energy lighting to cut costs.

Another green building element was Avalon Abseiling, who took the sustainable business award, for their innovative abseiling solution to cut costs and carbon emissions associated with insulating high-rise buildings.

Awards presenter, Lord Smith said: "The innovation seen here tonight is exemplary. However, the challenge we will face over the next decade will be to ensure that this commitment does not wane.

"Although we have made great strides toward mainstream acceptance of sustainability, this needs to be built upon, not only to protect our environment, but to safeguard future economic growth."
