Londoners get insulation incentives

Londoners are being offered cut price insulation as part of a plan to curb the capital's carbon emissions, the Mayor announced on Wednesday.

By offering cavity wall insulation from £250 and loft insulation from £274, plus an extra £100 cash back incentive to sweeten the transaction for the first 30,000 householders, the Mayor hopes to tap into substantial potential for carbon savings offered by the housing sector.

Homes are responsible for 38% of London's carbon emissions - a contribution that can be substantially reduced with simple measures like cavity wall and loft insulation, double glazing, heating and hot water improvements.

Apart from lower prices and cash-back incentives, Londoners are being persuaded to insulate their homes with promises of energy bill savings.

Improving home energy efficiency could shave £300 off the average Londoner's fuel bill, according to the Mayor's office. Insulation alone could cut heating bills across the apital by up to 40%, according to British Gas, who are delivering the home insulation scheme jointly with the Mayor of London.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Londoners to cut their energy bills and reduce harmful emissions that cause climate change, but we need to change the way we live and most of us can start by making our homes much more energy efficient.

"I urge all Londoners who have cavity walls or lofts that can be insulated to take up this offer. Those who do will see their energy bills cut and will be helping to minimise London's contribution to climate change."

Londoners have until June 1st 2007 to take up the Mayor's offer.
