npower to offer green boiler grants

Energy firm npower has pledged to fill the gap left by the Government's suspended Warm Front scheme by offering green boiler grants to certain homes.

Today (January 13) the energy giant offered grants of £350 toward a new boiler and, along the same lines as Warm Front, the npower Warm Home Grant will be available for residents aged 60 or over who own or privately rent their home.

The news comes after the Government's Warm Front campaign was put on hold until at least April this year.

The company, which says it's the first energy supplier to offer this sort of grant, will keep the scheme open until the end of March when Warm Front applications are expected to re-open.

npower say the grant can be used to help pay forthe installation of a new A-rated energy efficient boiler.

New A rated boilers are more than 90% efficient - but older boilers might be less than 60% efficient meaning for every £1 spent on gas 40p could be wasted.

npower's marketing manager for the hometeam, Joan Coe, said: "The Government's Warm Front scheme plays a vital role in making homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.

"While Warm Front funding is on hold until April 2011, we felt it was vital to play our part in supporting the nation by offering our own £350 grant for residents replacing a boiler that is more than ten years old.

"This can pose a health and safety risk to homeowners as well as having financial implications, so we're pleased to be able to make this commitment to provide the Warm Home grant until March 2011."
