The Preston Residents and Parents Against Toxic Dust are fighting plans by developers Midas Homes to clean up contaminated land.

The long running application was originally submitted to Torbay Council in January 2008 and was updated this week.

The council lists the application as ‘decision pending’ while there are more than 500 comments received from the public about the proposal.

The developers want to build 185 homes on the land, which is believed to be heavily contaminated with cyanide and arsenic.

Protesters fear the plans will result in toxic dust being blown over the nearby Preston primary School.

A spokesman said: “We are a group of concerned parents who need the support of the whole community to ensure the proposed development at the former gas works site at Hollicombe Torquay does not harm the health or jeopardise the safety of our young children.”
