Many people living along the East Anglian coast were forced to spend the night in emergency accommodation after severe flood warnings were issued.
The Environment Agency warned on Thursday that north west gales, low pressure and high tides could bring flooding along the east coast of the UK when tides peaked on Friday morning.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown chaired an emergency Cobra committee meeting at 6am on Friday to discuss the threat.
However, early reports on Friday from the Environment Agency suggested that the surge levels were lower than originally feared.
