Cemex are currently at the planning stage with details for a waste-to-cement factory near to the River Avon in Rugby.
A spokesman for Rugby’s Green Party called the plans to expand the plant next the river ‘sheer madness’ and claimed , should it get the go-ahead, it would make the Avon one of the ‘most polluted’ rivers in the country.
However, spokeswoman for Cemex said: “Our proposed plant will process waste that would otherwise be landfilled.
“It will be dried using a compositing process, so we can use it to fuel our cement kiln, therefore recovering energy from waste in our cement manufacturing and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.
“Environmentally, this is a win win situation, and there will be no river pollution.”
Cemex, is a global building solutions company and leading supplier of cement, ready-mixed concrete and aggregates.
The rugby site is, according to the firm’s website, one of the most modern cement plants in the world and represents a total investment of £200m.
