Ennis to begin flood defence work

Construction began this morning (August 9) on flood prevention work in parts of Ireland severely affected by high water.

Parts of Ennis, in the county town of Clare, were badly hit during serious flooding last November and will be improved by the relief works.

Ennis Town Council has signed a contract with BAM Civil, based in Galway, to construct the Aughanteeroe Flood Alleviation Scheme (AFAS).

The work at Aughanteeroe, in Gort Road, was identified in the Ennis Main Drainage and Flood Study Preliminary Report, following the November floods.

A spokesman for the town council explained: the scheme ‘was originally included in the River Fergus Lower,(Ennis) Drainage Scheme, Bank Place bridge to Doora bridge, but was brought forward and separated out to speed up the work’.

Now the work is underway it’s expected to be completed within four months at a total cost of €250,000.The main lower scheme will be built on site before the end of 2010.
