Recycling cash up for grabs for campaigning councils

Local authorities are being invited to bid for funds from a £16 million pot available to promote recycling to residents living in their area.

The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) will fund campaigns that get the recycling message across and directly focus on participation in council-run schemes.

The funding programme, the Behavioural Change Local Fund will back awareness campaigns running between June 2006 and March 2008.

According to a statement from WRAP the funding aims to accelerate the momentum in recycling that has built up over recent years and is intended to build on the successes of local authorities to date.

The funding will be divided between hard-hitting, quick-fire 'intensive packages', comprehensive and innovative campaigns and core campaign elements.

"Encouraging the general public to participate fully in the recycling services that are increasingly being provided by local authorities is one of the most crucial challenges if the UK is to continue to improve its recycling performance and meet Government targets," said Gareth Lloyd, WRAP's director of communications.

"This funding is to ensure good communication to help local authorities to deliver measurable improvements in performance, and to demonstrate the results through effective monitoring and evaluation."

Application forms and guidelines for the Behavioural Change Local Fund will be available from WRAP by the end of March and the deadline for bids will be the end of April 2006.

Alongside the local authority funding WRAP will be offering £500,000 to those in the community recycling sector, again to fund advertising and other awareness campaigns designed to boost domestic recycling.
