WRAP launches scheme to boost SME recycling

Thousands of pounds of funding are up for grabs as part of a drive to enable more small businesses to recycle.

The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) is inviting all recycling service providers, including local authorities, to apply for funding of up to £67,000 to develop and expand their service to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The grants could be used to fund activities such as taking on extra staff to expand collection rounds, marketing services to more businesses, or providing additional collection sacks and bins to reach more customers.

Successful applicants for the Funding Support Scheme will also be expected to match 50% of the total project costs.

Liz Morrish, manager of WRAP's SME Recycling Programme, said: "Research has shown that many SMEs currently find it difficult to access appropriate recycling services for the waste materials they generate and the result is that much of their waste goes to landfill.

"The Funding Support Scheme aims to encourage more recycling service providers to develop their services to meet the needs of SMEs - most of which are keen to recycle.

"We are encouraging service providers to apply early to the scheme to ensure that their application forms are in as soon as possible and avoid disappointment."

WRAP bosses will agree an SME recruitment and collection target for each successful applicant.

Under the rules of the scheme, a minimum of 80% of customers taking up the services funded by the grant must be smaller businesses which employ 250 people or less.
