Biffa signs deal for three automated recycling plants

Refuse firm Biffa UK signed a multi-million pound deal which aims to sort and recycle 90% of 200,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste a year.

The deal, signed in Birmingham’s NEC at the Recycling Waste Management (RWM) conference, will see the first of three plants operational in early 2010.

The first plant, currently under construction in Manchester’s Trafford Park, will be followed by another in the Midlands and a third in London.

The second and third plants are both sue to become operational towards the second half of 2010.

They will be carbon copies of each all able to process 200,000 tonnes of recycling and all aiming for a 90% recycling rate using the latest technology developed by TITECH UK.

Biffa UK’s director of engineering and quality, John Casey, explained the firm has signed contract with five major businesses so far after they found a gap in the market for dry mix recycling.

He said: “Last year we set out an exhaustive process to find out where the dry mix recyclates were.

“We then set about defining a plant specification that would arrive at achieving very high recycling targets … we also wanted to ensure the plant was stream lined and highly automated.”

Chairman of Stadler, the firm who will build the three plants, Willi Stadler added he was proud to work with Biffa.
