The four year contract, which started last month, has an option to extend for a further three years.

Under the agreement, Biffa will collect bulked dry recyclables from Basildon’s recycling centre in Billericay and transport them to its materials recycling facility (MRF) at Edmonton in north London. Glass will be sent direct to a glass reprocessor.

Biffa’s Edmonton plant is now processing materials from 12 local authority areas in total and 70% of its annual 200,000 tonnage is from the municipal market.

Biffa Recycling’s contract manager, Steve Oulds, said: “This new contract has enabled Basildon Council to enhance its recycling service for residents as our plant can handle a wider range of materials such as Tetrapaks, foils, and so on.”

Basildon Council’s head of street scene, Gary Edwards, added: “This contract will help the council to meet its ambitious financial and recycling targets. We are particularly happy that Biffa will provide the opportunity for our residents to recycle more materials than ever before through their kerbside collections.”
