Mr Dennis’s tenure as ESA director general will finish on 31 December 2014 and a new executive director will be appointed. He will continue to be involved with the sector through his on-going involvement with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).

In 1993, Dennis joined the National Association of Waste Disposal Contractors (NAWDC) as executive director then commercial director where, in 1996, he was involved in the decision to change the name to the Environmental Services Association (ESA).

In 2000, he was promoted to the position of deputy chief executive where he remained for 10 years before becoming director general in 2010.

United views

ESA chairman David Palmer-Jones said: “Barry’s role throughout his time at the ESA has always been to represent the industry in a professional way, and build relationships from which we can benefit.

“Our links with CIWM have been strengthened through his involvement, and the successes of his work in the arrangements we now have for the RWM Exhibition, held at the NEC in Birmingham every year, is one example of many that we have of his dedication to the industry.

Our recently signed agreement with CIWM, which created a new voice for the industry, Resources and Waste UK, speaking with one voice and representing our united views, is a legacy of a lifetime of commitment Barry has given to do what is best for our industry.”

In response to the announcement of Dennis’s retirement, CIWM chief executive Steve Lee said: “CIWM wishes Barry the very best on his retirement from ESA. He has served the waste and resource management sector long and well and we are very pleased that he will continue to do so through his involvement with CIWM.”
